Thank God! We only have more than 2 thousand (2,059 as of August 3, 2020) deaths from COVID-19. This pales in comparison to the massive demises in the US (154 thousand +), Brazil (84 thousand +), Mexico (45 thousand +), UK (44 thousand +), France and Italy (30 thousand +).

As I write, the president’s better judgment got the best of him by switching quarantine imposition in NCR and other coronavirus hotspots from the relaxed GCQ (general community quarantine) to MECQ (modified enhanced community quarantine) implying that he truly listens to the pleas of medical frontliners whose hospital capacities needed that much deserved reprieve that may come from a more stringent lockdown.

In fairness to Filipinos, we are actually considered one of the most compliant lot (at least in Asia) and, like everyone else, we’d do anything on Earth to survive this pandemic.

With ardour, hospital staff shall continue attending to patients in honour of the Hippocrates Oath. Policemen and soldiers will forge on enforcing health emergency protocols in the name of peace and order on top of national security. Other personnel must also be tapped as essential workers and should, thus, prod on in delivering goods and services pumping prime the humongous business sector that provides employment in an interconnected web of professions that puts money in the pockets and food on the table that husbands, wives and all labouring individuals cling on to for dear life undaunted by the rising (virus) infections.

Similarly, legislators swore to craft timely and relevant laws according to the people’s needs while executives promise to implement these regulations towards countrywide progress. Of course, lawyers and judges are still very much in charge of protecting our legal rights under the constitution.

Man has, in fact, been in existence for billions of years now and a predicted occurrence of this severe acute respiratory syndrome can’t possibly downgrade the indomitable spirit of humanity who has overcome even more seemingly insurmountable aggravations in history.

COVID is SO BAD but you need to be POSITIVE to see through all my positivism.

Since you're here...

... we have a small favour to ask. And unlike many new organisations, we have chosen an approach that allows us to keep our journalism accessible to all, regardless of where they live or what they can afford. But we need your ongoing support to keep working as we do.

We will engage with the most critical issues of our time – from the escalating climate catastrophe to widespread inequality to the influence of big tech on our lives. At a time when factual information is a necessity, we believe that each of us, around the world, deserves access to accurate reporting with integrity at its heart.

Our editorial independence means we set our own agenda and voice our own opinions. Our journalism is free from commercial and political bias and not influenced by billionaire owners or shareholders. This means we can give a voice to those less heard, explore where others turn away, and rigorously challenge those in power.

We need your support to keep delivering quality journalism, to maintain our openness and to protect our precious independence. Every reader contribution, big or small, is so valuable. Support akawnTHINK from as little as Php100 – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
